Tuesday 6th and we arrive in Vang Vieng after a 5 hour bus journey which was pretty comfy as bus journeys go! After trekking about a bit to find somewhere to pitch up we ended up staying at a place called 'Vieng Savanah' which was pretty cheap, clean and had some good views of Vang Vieng, as we managed to get a room on the top floor with a balcony. At this point we were still traveling with Ben and Jess, a couple we had met back in Pai and had then bumped into again on the long boat on our journey to Laos. As they were planning on moving on from Vang Vieng within a couple of days we decided on sorting out the infamous 'tubing' for the following day (for those who don't know what tubing is it'll soon become clear).
Anyway after booking ourselves up for the 10km tubing option we all had dinner at a little roadside noddle shack which was super cheap and served really fresh, good noodle soup. A few beers later it seemed only right to move onto a few bars...this then turned into quite a few more bars and, having then met up with a group of Americans and some other English, what was planned to be a quiet night became a much later affair and one which will be remembered for many reasons. The next morning it was a bit of a struggle getting up, but apart from Ben who was a little worse for wear from the night before, we we're all back on form as soon as we were up, and ready for tubing.
The infamous tubing then.... basically you get a massive rubber ring (the inside of a tractor tyre) and jump into it on a river and float your way down (we chose the 10km option) through rapids and calm waters surrounded by the most amazing views. To add even more fun to the whole thing from about half way down there are bars on both sides on the river where they throw you a rope and drag you to the side where you can grab a drink or two before jumping back into the river and continuing on your way. Most of the bars had swings of some sort set up and zip wires which sent you catapulting into the water from varying heights. Henry definitely made good use of showing off some of his less glamorous moves. Arriving back after the sun had set we then had a chilled out night in the cafes which Vang Vieng is renowned because they ALL show episodes of Friends continually!!
The next day Ben and Jess left us in Vang Vieng as they continued on their travels but we used the day wisely to relax on the island, in the sun, in hammocks beside the river reading our books. The following day we hired a moped and decided to go and check out some of the caves which were outside the town of Vang Vieng. We came across one cave which was amazing, just us and a couple of torches and the cave seemed almost untouched. We then came across another cave which was far more touristy and because of the size of it you had to have a guide to lead you. Unfortunately the flash light they gave me leaked battery acid all down my leg which I wasn't happy about obviously and the cave was so muddy inside we ended up doubling back on ourselves. We spent the rest of the day relaxing and soaking up the chilled out atmosphere both of us loved back on the island and made the most of that evening it before we left to travel down to Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
