At last..Cambodia
Entry 69 of 87 | show all | print this entry |
Again our 6hr bus took 10 hours, including an hour and a half wait just across the border for a connecting bus even though we were told that you dont have to change bus...grrr...feckin travel agents in vietnam. Instantly crossing the border (which is very easy!) you can see how much poorer Cambodia is. Roads way more potholed and dusty, lots of dirty kids and half done construction. I think we are going to have a few more adventures in this country. When we reach the city we realise that the place is actually more expensive than Vietnam. Food and drink especially - however we hear later this is because most things are imported and coz of the corruption there are high taxes etc. Looking for a cheap restraunt along the river was more or less impossible - not too far off european prices. While we were waiting for a couple of people we met at a steet corner we saw a couple of mad things. First of all a guy drinking along on his scooter was grabbed from behind by a police, and in the process this dragged the policeman along in a skating manner and made the bike guy crash into a car! We had no idea what was going on. A big crowd gather examing the car in great detail (it had a tiny scratch) and the guy just walked away with the policeman giving out following him. The guy was saying nothing (like a criminal in america - "Im saying nothing until I speak to my lawyer"). About half an hour later we see a little crach of 2 bikes. Nothing too serious, but there was a bit of blood (what do you expect - they wear no helmets and they wear shorts!) and one guy had a pretty bad knee after it. It was amazing to see. They all just walked to the side, with another crowd gathering, and they just discussed it. I didnt see any raised voices, or no arguments - seemed to be quite democratic, pity about the corrupt goverment! Many begging children and amputees about and some of them there was nothing wrong with them.
SAturday morning we changed our arm and headed to the Laos embassy to see if we ould get the visa - should have realised with our experiences that embassies dont work hours like that!Bit of a waste as our rickshaw guy (back to these - not seen since india) from yesterday had brought us and we sorta agreed a expensive price. Oh well, got to see a litle tour of the city. Feck it, lets getout of here and see the rest of the country (we have only 2 weeks left to get to Chiang mai in thailand, via laos!) Got the bus to Battambang
Phnom Pehn has a coupe of well decorated streets but alot of dirt potholed filled roads around - alot of poor and alot of rich - not many in between.
