August 9th is Singapore's birthday and what an extravaganza!!! The street traffic comes to a near halt from over a month prior to the actual celebration day just to practice for a parade, EVERY Saturday. They even have practice shows for the fireworks each weekend! Around that time, you start to see the flags go up on just about every building. Residents even hang flags from outside their HDB ( flats and cars proudly display the flying flags out their windows as if they were heading to a tailgate party for a sporting event. On the day of the nation's birthday, it's highly encouraged for everyone to wear red and white, the colors represented in their flag. All this gives people a sense of camaraderie and it's esthetically pleasing during the live television screening!

This grand celebration all revolves around an event called the National Day Parade. It's really a parade of their military might and ends in a central location. The location changes every year but returns to Padang, the birthplace of Singapore's independence, every five years. Celebrating Singapore's 45th birthday, Padang provided 360 degree views of the city and from our seats in the yellow section, we could view the Central Business District (CBD) and the new Marina Bay Sands Resort and Casino. They really took full advantage of the location by having fireworks shoot off from buildings, stadium scaffolding and up from platforms in the Marina Bay, even shooting off crescent moons and stars (both in their flag).

Once you enter the event gate, you receive a "fun tote" filled with goodies. This year, local designers outfitted seven different looks for the bags. Inside the bags, were "fun boxes" filled with different games, cookies, drinks, removable tattoos and stickers. They also threw in ponchos, a Singapore flag w/ a stand, a flag which lights up in different patterns and can be used as a clapper, and coupons. I love our totes and will use them for grocery that keep on giving!

Take a look at the pictures/videos to see what we saw...W
