My cousin said she was planning a trip to Langkawi and Penang Islands, in Malaysia, with her two kids and parents. She asked if we wanted to come up so we checked into flights but it was more then I wanted to pay. We looked into taking an overnight bus but then Steve found the cheap $1 airfares being advertised on Tiger. Out the door, we ended up paying $100 for the both of us (b/c it's never $1...with fuel surcharge, taxes, etc) but we had to go the wknd after we were suppose to meet with our fam!  Pay the same amount for an overnight bus or fly?  We were selfish...

I can't say Penang/Georgetown was high on our list of travels but since we live in the area, why not! It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, once a base for the British East India Company. There's not much to do there in the form of activities. It's more of a walking tour type of town, fun for those interested in photography and of course Malaysia is super cheap compared to Singapore.

I'd like to see what Georgetown looked like back in it's prime. The architecture is interesting but the buildings are in need of a lot of work.  We stayed in an old shop house.  It has so much potential for being a nice b&b but for the price, I suppose there's not enough funds for the upkeep!  We paid $50 for two nights, in a private room.  The guest house was a hostel, with shared bathrooms and a few rooms which had bunk beds.  There was a common room and breakfast (toast w/ butter and jam, coffee, tea) was included. When we first checked in, we did have a battle with mosquitoes but in the end, we prevailed!  We even had A/C so we were elated.  After adjusting from our usual, spoiled, environment, we were happy to be in our new digs.

The following morning, we walked all over Georgetown!  Our souvenir sunburn was proof of that!  One of the first things I did was run into a convenience store to buy a pack of gum.  Since it's illegal to purchase gum in Singapore, I'd been craving it.  Everything is better when you can't have it!!

Eventually, we ended up in a mall and I was semi-shocked while riding the escalator.  I smelled something familiar and noticed that a man, a few steps above us, was smoking a cigarette in the mall!  Wow, that's just insane!!

To cap off the night, we plopped down in a restaurant and drank a couple pals of beer.  Can't beat the prices!  We even got to try Tiger Crystal beer...didn't think it was soooo special but had to give it a go.  Since the beers were our main entrees, we decided to have pupu's, then headed back towards Love Lane...the location of our guest house...c'mon!

It truly is great being able to hop on a plane and be in an entirely new environment for the amount we are currently spending!  Best enjoy it while we can.  So much more to see and do!!!
