99 days until departure
Entry 1 of 120 | show all | print this entry |
This entry contains:
1) The original First Entry.
2) What I am doing on this trip.
3) Other items of general interest.
1) I paid for my flights this morning. I'm somewhat anxiously hoping that my savings are going to reach a sufficient level before I take off. If not maybe I'll enable the pay pal feature and pray that this page meets with wild success along the lines of Waiterrant.net I'm going to sending my passport off for a Syrian visa next week. Until then, I'm just reading up on regional history and other traveler's accounts.
2) I am launching a crusade after Richard the Lionheart. Except I am trying passivity and pleasantness and my mode of warfare is the dispensation of capital because in Marxian terms we all know that such a thing will cause real harm : )
I can't help but be flippant - some know that it's in my nature. Others try to tolerate it. On a more earnest level, I am off parting with my hard earned $$ because for the greater part of my life - that which followed infancy - I have always been fascinated with the ancient and important places where so many events which have crafted history(ultimately which has created the world which we all know) took place. I aim to see many of them. I hope this will help me understand them better* and satisfy my longing to be in such places of event. It means a lot to me in any case.
*Nothing illustrated the importance of "being there" more than at my visit to Waterloo (in Belgium). I had never known why a brilliant general like Napoleon could have made such tactically naive decisions on that fateful day in 1815. After seeing the lay of the landscape, I can sympathize with him knowing how he was fooled. In my mind, at least, the mystery was solved.
3) I just wanted to write a quick note in an obvious starting place to say two things: First, if you haven't noticed already, I update my travel blog according to where I was when the events took place, not the actual day of the entry. For example, on January 21 I wrote the entry for January 19th and dated it as such. I do this to keep my dates clear in my own mind. Also, I will sometimes go back to modify entries if need be. I am working at catching up from my Fall trip. If I get around to it, once that is done I will finish my entries from last spring when I dwelt ten days in living hell (Egypt). As of today, I have 26 days left to do this. Wish me luck.
(this entry last updated 5 February 07 from Edmonton, Canada, where I am whittling away the days catching up on my blog, until I fly away to Vietnam).
