Where I stayed
Kimba Roadhouse Caravan Park
We reach Ceduna fairly early stopping briefly at quarantine to surrender some very sad looking apples we’d forgotten were in the Waeco, fuelled up and had a vote to stay or “push on” unanimous decision to “push on” and we’re off new road as we are heading to Adelaide via Port Augusta, on the way over we lazily took the ferry and headed down to Port Lincoln, this way adds only about 160 kms with limited ferries and $450 we’re happy to drive it.
It’s getting to late afternoon and we find ourselves cruising between to road-trains the truck ahead of us overtakes a slow caravan so using the magic of ”breaker, breaker” on the CB we ask if it’s ok for us to overtake, saved us so much time as he had the advantage of knowing the road was clear when we couldn’t see! Not to mention Bill was driving and sitting behind a slow poke does nothing for his blood pressure.
We plan on stopping at a town called Wudinna but once we see the caravan park we have a quick vote and keep going. Quick check of the map we decide on the next town which is Kimba I ring ahead to the roadhouse to check when they close as it’s 6ish, all good although I’m told quite sternly “8pm sharp” (on a positive note we should make it easily). Kimba, we discover, is the exact half way point between Perth and Sydney and also home of The Big Galah. We arrive well before the witching hour although I’m a bit scared when we order dinner as I dared order a bowl of vegies for one of the kids, it took two women a good 5 minutes to figure out how to enter it in the register I’m told they’ve never had anyone order a bowl of vegies “as they are a roadhouse” I try to make a joke however clearly this is “Happy Lady” from the earlier ph call everyone’s meals but mine comes out, apparently my chicken is taking a while to cook, even though they caused the delay half way through my meal they have cleaned all the tables pulled the blinds down and have started mopping the floor!! Feeling the love I decide it’s probably best for everyone I ask for a container and take it back to the van, I’m way too tired to deal with the situation and being on the news tomorrow as “lady goes mental at roadhouse in Kimba” is not a good idea!
Off to bed, we arrived after dark so didn’t realise we had parked next to the “party campervan” a group of 5 laughing Hyena women from goodness knows where, couldn’t catch the accent over the snorts of laughing. Yes I know it’s early but remember people we have driven nearly 1700km in the last 2 days. Thankfully we must be so tired we fall into a coma like sleep (well I did anyway!)
