We set out from Kas (on the wrong road!) after a relaxed morning, waiting for a huge Greek tour group to move through the hotel breakfast room. Once on the correct road, we had an incredible drive down the coast road, passing some incredible gorges with ocean views, before stopping at Kalkan for a cup of coffee and soda. After that we moved straight on to Olu Deniz. This is one of the special places in the world. The name translates to "dead sea", presumably because of the stillness of the water, but I am pretty certain that there are deeper mythological reasons for the name. I could probably come up with some mythological voyagers entering the inlet, and the crew being slain by a monster hiding under the nearby islands···.
However, the place is beautiful, and despite what the guidebooks have to say about the profusion of hotels, remains fairly unspoilt. We were virtually the only people on the beach, and the light was intermittently grey with cloud, then bright with peeping sun. There was very little wind, and the water had the incredible turquoise blue hue that is so alluring. The setting amongst the mountains is just quite extraordinary.
From there, we drove into Fethiye, about a 25 minute drive until we were able to find a room at the Yacht Plaza Hotel, overlooking the small boat marina. The area was completely protected, and even though the temperature was in the 50's, I felt warmer.
After checking in, we took a stroll and ended up at the Iskele Restaurant and Ocakbashi, where our waiter, Tio, provided us with excellent service. We had the full gamut of a seaside dinner, with salads, fish and wine. What a dinner and we walked home contented and relaxed. Patty and I read and surfed the internet in the lobby, while the children read in the nearby room and fell asleep.
Another thought about Turkey: There is amazingly widespread availability of the internet, and in almost all places we have stayed in, it has been high quality wireless. It has certainly made travel with a laptop very convenient. Our most popular websites:,,, and of course,
