Flag of Greece  , Crete,
Thursday, April 12, 2012

We landed in Heraklion in Crete and spent the afternoon checking out the main city. Brad was still sick from the day before so we had to take it easy. Walked around the fort and through the markets and saw a bunny skinned in the butchers window. It still had its little cottontail and feet with fur, poor thing. Aaron took Brad back to the room to rest and I took Kosh and Cha to the Museum. They really loved it but it was pretty much your typical dinosaur bones and stuffed animals. We went to the most fantastic restaurant and ate snails, mussels, prawns and more. When they give you your bill they bring along a vanilla icing sugar ball in water and shot glasses of Raki for free to end your meal. Great atmosphere
The next day we headed to Agios Nikolaos to stay for 2 nights. We had a hire car and did a big driving tour around this area of Crete. It was Easter Saturday in Greece so in every little town we passed through there was a dummy in front of the church hung up above branches ready to be burnt at Midnight. It is to represent Judas who betrayed Jesus. Easter is celebrated bigger  than Xmas in Greece. They follow the Greek orthodox calendar so this year their Easter was a week after our Easter (often it falls on the same date). So the kids were lucky to celebrate Easter twice.
In Greece they have these loud Firework poppers. You cannot see them, you just hear such a loud bang and its like the thunder when you're not expecting it and it makes you jump out of your skin. They are ridiculously loud and it is tradition to throw these at Easter. As we drove through the little towns people would throw one and we had no idea what was going on, it was quite scary and could have been a bomb. We only got told in the late afternoon what they were. This trip was such beautiful coastal countryside and I found my perfect beach for retirement. It was hard to leave.
The noise of the waves against the pebble beach and thousands of rocks rolling under the waves was so relaxing. We drove through some towns with funny names, one was skinias which the kids converted to skinny ass. We stopped for lunch and the owner of this little Greek cafe was there and very drunk for Easter, he came over and shouted us beers and wanted us to stay all afternoon. Very funny and loud lunch stop.
That night we watched the church celebrations for Easter and had dinner on the lake to watch the fireworks at midnight and Judas be burnt. It was the noisiest Easter ever, the Poppers were going off all night. Although you don't really see them they are just like those little poppers that you throw at the ground and they explode (1000 times the noise) but they do have bits that rebound and Kosha copped one in the face, Ouch!
The next day we did a beach hop, checking out all the local beaches. Lovely beach day out.
