Waitomo is rolling hills and farmland for miles around. Underneath the ground there is a vast cave system and that is the main attraction here. The village itself is tiny and there is not much to do, not even a proper supermarket so make sure you stock up in Auckland or where ever you are coming from before here. I did a cave tour with Cave World. We had to wear a wetsuit and helmet and gumboots. We looked ridiculous. Before entering the cave system we each chose a tube and carried that with us. Inside the caves are pretty much untouched, no fancy decking or crap which I was glad of. There is an underground river that we floated down in our tubes. Everybody locks legs and we float down in a chain. There was 2 sections with a drop but it wasn't exactly extreme. I was really begining to freeze in my wetsuit and was glad when the water section was over. We were only down there for about an hour but it was alot of fun. Some of the other tours are a bit more extreme.. I stayed in Juno Hall which is a quiet little hostel on a farm. There are farm animals scattered all around and the ugliest pig you have ever seen. They had a proper trampoline as well which was great. There was not much to do here the next day whilst waiting for the bus so ended up playing tennis for about 2hrs with Ryan. The tennis court is in a really unlikely place.. Waitomo would be a nice place to work in for a couple of weeks.
Next stop Rotorua.
