Katoomba is the base town that most people stay to do the Blue Mtns. We wanted to stay in the Flying Fox but it was fully booked by the time we got there. We stayed in Katoomba YHA instead and it is one of the nicest YHA hostels I have ever stayed in. I usually try to avoid YHA hostels as they are usually a bit sterile and devoid of atmosphere. This is a good one though. The next day we walked along the Federation trail and took the Scenic Railway back to the top (not very exciting really but beat 900 steps back up). We then walked out to the 3 sisters and spent the second night in the Flying Fox. The Flying Fox is one of those small cosy couple run hostels with loads of character. Really enjoyed staying here and they have loads of guitars, jimbas, digges lying around the place. Highly recommended although there is a bit of a queue for the 2 bathrooms in the morning.
