I spent my first summer away from home in 2000
. I stayed with my brother and 2 friends (Mark & Sco) at a shabby hostel called the New Central on 1412 Market St. Of course I had to go back to the old block and check it out. The New Central is still there albeit with a fancy new reception. The bar next door is still there but it is a gay bar now and not called Judy's anymore. This part of SF is really shabby and rundown. I don't know why we spent an entire summer in this part of SF. I have such a different impression of SF now in just 3 days.
San Francisco is a seriously cool city! As I write, we are sitting in a cafe a couple of blocks from our hostel. We have checked out and our bags are in storage. In 2 hours we will wander down to the BART station on Powell and Market and head out to the airport. We are flying to Dresden via Dusselldorf with Air Berlin. This marks the end of our epic adventure. The next chapter is upon us. We are really looking forward to catching up with all our family and friends in Germany and Ireland over the next few weeks. There is a big party for us in Germany. All the Anders clan will be there and a pig is going to die in our honor!
See you all soon,
Love Dave & Angie xx
SF is our final destination on our U.S. tour. The flight was smooth and it is easy to get into town with the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). We stayed at the Amsterdam hostel on Taylor and Bush. Pretty good location. The following day we wandered about downtown, checked out China town and went up Coit Tower. We checked out the twisty part of Lombard St. and later rented some bikes. We cruised down by the waterfront and over to Golden Gate bridge and across to Sausalito. The bridge was shrouded in fog to begin with which looks so eerie and ethereal. On our way back the fog cleared up for wonderful views of the bridge and downtown SF. The next day we cycled out to Haight Ashbury passed the Painted Ladies (iconic but in my opinion unremarkable) and on into Golden Gate park. We had typical SF weather while we were here. Foggy cloudy mornings that quickly clear up and warm when the sun is shining but quite cold in the shade.
