So this concludes our travels in Indonesia. It has been a pretty interesting country to travel. The people are great mostly. Travel can be slow and outside of the tourist spots there is sometimes not a lot to see. Java was a bit of a slog, Bali was a bit different than expected, Lombok was good especially the Gili islands and Ringani. Sumbawa was a drag but Flores was nice. Our main highlights were:
> Mt. Bromo
> Trekking Ringani
> Gili Islands
> Boat trip from Flores back the Lombok
Some mediocre facts:
> Spent 26,000,000 IDR (2300 EUR) over 6 weeks. That's almost 400 EUR a week for 2 people.
> Stayed at 21 different guest houses and hotels. Avg. per night 15 EUR. Some real dumps and occasionally some nice places.
> Petrol prices at the pumps 4,500 IDR (0.40 EUR) per liter.
> 90% of the men folk smoke at least 2 packs a day. A pack costs less than 1 EUR and you can smoke pretty much anywhere. Indonesian women don't really smoke, preferring chewing tobacco or in the villages, betel nut.
> 1 large Bintang (660ml) usually about 3 EUR.
> Dinner usually about 3-5 EUR each.
Indonesia is a sprawling country and you need lots of time to get around and lots of time to recover from getting around! You can see quite a lot in 2 months especially if you fly.
As we write this we are chilling out in a bar in Singapore. You may be wondering why we are back here as we still had another 2 weeks left on our Indonesian visa. The truth is we have realized we are a little over Asia. We spent almost 6 months in S.E. Asia before and now we are not that excited about rice paddies, traditional village life etc. We are bored to death by temples. If you surf or dive, there are many more options for you in Indonesia. We have decided to completely alter our itinerary. It happened a little by chance. Firstly, our Sri Lanka flight booking failed to go through. Later after some long bus journeys and a ferry ride, Angie indicated that she wasn't loving the trip so far, wasn't all that interested and really wasn't looking forward to India. At first I was staunchly against changing our plan but the more I thought about it, I wasn't enjoying it all that much either.
So, we have altered our itinerary. It is now down to a 3 month trip so we will be back in Europe for the tail end of summer. Tmrw we fly to Vancouver via Tokyo. We will rent a car and explore BC for 4 weeks and catch up with our friends Mike & Steph (and Ruby) in Nelson. Following that we are thinking about dropping down into Washington, Oregon and northern California, flying out of San Francisco 2 weeks later. We will drop in on my cousin south of Seattle and catch up with our friend Justus in Portland.
So there you have it, some radical changes to our plan but still pretty damn exciting.
Next post will be from Vancouver!!!
