After our demanding hike up Mt. Ringani we decided to relax for one week on the beautiful Gili Islands. There are 3 of them in total. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. They all lying close together north west of Lombok. We started with Gili Air as this is the closest one to Lombok and takes only 20 mins with the local ferry. Gili Air is beautiful with its white sandy beaches and amazingly blue water. It is quiet there but social enough. We met a very nice couple from Melbourne we were hanging out with.

While I was snorkeling away exploring the under water world, Dave was playing chess with the locals. We had fresh fish every evening. It is hard to resist with such a great choice of fish and seafood. We especially loved fish Pepes, which is grilled to perfection in a banana leaf with local curry like spices. Delicious!

After 3 days on Gili Air we island hopped to Gili Meno, which is the smallest one of the 3 and also the quietest one. There are only a few bungalows dotted on the eastern side and a few cheap options at the center of the island. You can circle the island in 60 mins by foot. The beaches on Gili Meno are just as stunning and you have them all to yourself. For us, we found it a little too quiet and also food was a bit on the expensive side. The sunsets on the western side of the island were spectacular and we had to walk back with our torches across the island.

As there was no ATM on the island we left after 2 days for Gili Trawangan, the biggest island and also the most popular one. It was quite busy there. Lots of bars, restaurants and dive shops. We found a lovely quiet and friendly spot about 100 m away from the hustle and bustle. The snorkeling there was the best I found. So many cool fish & turtles and corals. It was amazing. We only spent 2 nights there as we needed to continue our journey eastwards to Flores.

All in all, the Gili Islands are stunning and totally worth staying a bit longer. We liked Gili Air the best. Not too quiet and not too busy and the locals are very friendly.

Love to come back one day.
