Where I stayed
Ko Sumai is more of a package holiday destination. There are loads of exclusive resorts with private beaches. Chaweng is too commercial and you cannot even lay on the beach without the same bunch of people coming to you repeatedly trying to sell you shit. It is not even all that nice for swimming with too many people ripping up and down on jet skis. We met one local woman who ran a resturant called Harrys. She had been living on the island for the last 30 years but she hates the place now. It seems that Ko Samui underwent massive development in the last ten years to turn it into what is now. It is not cheap either. Also, if you read the local paper there are quite a few articles about drug busts and dodgey bar owners
When you come to Thailand you will almost certainly be propositioned many times by some slick looking indian / nepalise man trying to selling you a suit. Well I was curious and decided to allow one to bring us into his shop and try and sell me something. I told him that I was definitely not buying a suit today but would look at his workmanship and decided another day. He seemed to ignore this and showed me a catalogue of designer suits I could choose from, a selection of materials etc and he could make me a very nice suit in 2-3 days. He kept using the word "happy", for example: "I make you happy, me make you nice suit, happy price. Big shop no do good job, don't care to make happy. I make happy suit, happy price. You happy, me happy" : ). We have not been able to stop doing impressions of this ever since : ). Eventually, I managed to get out of the shop with out buying anything dispite his efforts to make me a shirt so that I could see his quality or make a nice dress for Angie. Hehe! However, if you are looking for a suit and particularly now in low season you get a real nice one for between 3000-5000 baht.
We stayed 3 days here on Ko Samui which was enough. There is a half-moon party tmrw on Ko Phangnan so that is where we go in the morning.
