Phuket is so much better than we were expecting. Actually we were considering skipping Phuket but instead we decided to stay in Phuket town and not the beaches. Thalang guesthouse is where we stayed and we had one of the hugest double rooms we have ever seen for 350B. We got comfortable here and decided to stay for a while. The town itself is interesting and is not touristy. The people are friendly here. Also there seems to be a large amount of gold shops, hair dressers and cosmetic surgery clinics. We found a nice bar / cafe to hangout in the evenings called the Jamming Cafe. The owner jams there every night. There were a bunch of U.S Navy boys there that we got talking to. They were stopped here for a few days before setting sail for Jordan.
The beach areas such as Karong are on the west coast. Phuket is really a large island connected by road in the north to the mainland. It is cheap to get a local bus but if you miss the last bus back it is gonna cost you 400-500B with a tuc tuc. This is what happend to us, we went out to Karong for the day but missed the last bus back and got a tuc tuc back to town.
It was our first experience with a tuc tuc here and we were taken to a fancy jewellery shop so that the driver could get his fuel tokens. There were some other farang there also looking disinterested. They were nice in the shop though and didnt push us too much to buy something.
We spent just two nights here, did some laundry and got a bus up to Phang Nga the next morning. I love the whole laundry service over here. It is cheap and you get you clothes back clean and folded. No battling with the washing machine and using dryers that you have to us 2-3 times just to get your clothes dry like in Australia.
