The Cameron highlands are situated about 4 hours north of KL and is quite high above sea level which makes for a nice cool temperate climate. This is a welcome relief from the sticky heat at sea level. We stayed at Father's Guesthouse in Tanah Rata. This guesthouse is run by an Indian family and is an excellent place to stay, even better if you score a twin or a double as the dorms are not the best. It was a public holiday (they have many in Malaysia due to the religious diversity) while we were staying here so all the guesthouses were booked up. We were lucky to get a bed. I would recommend booking ahead here if it is the weekend and in high season (June - Sept).

The highlands are famous for their trails (we did 10, 11 & 12) and the tea plantations. "Boh" is the local tea company and it is a nice black tea. We got a local bus to the turn off for the Sungei Palais tea plantation. It is then a 2km walk but it was not long before we were picked up by a friendly Malay family and had wonderful views on our way up on the back of a pick-up truck. Simalarly on the way back we were picked up and dropped at the next town. Most of the Malay people are friendly towards us whities. We met the Irish couple who are travelling much the same direction as us.
