Where I stayed
Ringo's Foyer Guesthouse

Flag of Malaysia  , Melaka State,
Sunday, May 11, 2008

Our stay in Melaka was made extra special due in part to the most informative and friendliest hostel manager we ever met. Raymond who runs Ringo's guesthouse helped us plan our entire itinery for Malaysia. So it now looks like we will be spending 3-4 weeks in Malaysia:

Melaka -> Pulau Tioman -> KL -> Cameroon Highlands -> Taiman Negara -> Pulau Perhentian -> Kota Bharu
My first impressions of Melaka are that it is a bustling port town with lots of life. It is a bit grotty in places and the traffic system is a bit chaotic but we are getting used to this now.Melaka has a lot of history attached due to it's stragegic position on the Straits of Melaka. It first came to prominence in the 14th century when a Sumatrian prince fled to Melaka where he made it his HQ. It became a favoured port for resupplying ships. Later it was taken over by the Portuguese, Dutch and the English. You can see evidence of this history when you stay here, particularly in the wide range of food you can eat. (ref LP for history lesson..)
The night we arrived the whole china-town area was closed off for the chinese night market. Usual market stuff on offer. There are loads of cafe's and bars here. The Discovery Cafe is a good on to down a few Myramars (beer that is), the staff are very friendly there and can help you with travel tips etc.

We spent 2 nights here.

P.S. Pics to follow...
