We spent a whole night and a whole day travelling by bus but we made it. This was an unexpected place to end up as we just took the first bus out of Belize to any city in Guatemala and Flores ended up to be where we went!

Flores itself is a small island on a lake and is connected by one road. Its mainly set up for tourists passing through so lots of restaurants and souvenir shops. The buildings were very pretty and all painted in blues and pinks with tin roofs.

We didn't stay here too long as it was very quiet and there are only so many times you can walk around the same island!Although we are very glad we stopped here as we had yet another highlight of our trip so far.....

Tikal Ruins

We booked on for the 3am tour of the ruins, meaning we had to get up at 2am! The idea behind this was that we would arrive at the Tikal park for around 4.30 and then hike through the jungle in the dark and make it to the top of the biggest pyramid/temple for 5-5.30 when the sun begins to rise....and the best part...the jungle starts to wake up.

We sat at the top of the pyramid and listened to all the strange noises. Howler monkeys were waking up all over the jungle canopy and we could hear them howling away, they sounded  more like panthers than monkeys! Also spider monkeys were waking up and swinging past us too!

After taking some time listening to the noises as the sun rose we walked through the jungle some more to see some more of the ruins and learn a bit more about the history. This whole area is a lost Mayan city in the jungle that fell & was abandoned in the 10th century. It only got re-discovered in the 1900's and they are still uncovering buildings under all the soil and shrubbery, so far they have uncovered over 16,000 buildings.

The main towers and pyramids are all laid out in a particular way facing the sun so that the light hits through the windows at the right times of the day. One of the pyramids is so steep and dangerous, tourists are no longer allowed to climb however as we were there so early in the morning, no security was there to catch us!

In the main central area, if you stand on the ground where the sacrificial fire used to be in the middle and clap your hands, you hear a strange squeaking sound up in one of the pyramid windows above. Very strange!

Of course it was great to learn about the history here, but the most fantastic part was being deep in the jungle hearing it wake up. We are glad we paid the extra money to go on the tour at this time.

We also saw parrots, toucans, ant eaters. Our guide also found a tarantula and let us hold it!
