Chiang Rai is a small town which is another gateway for treks, elephant rides, rafting and other adventure activities.

We stayed there as it was a town to stop off to in between Pai and the Thai border, otherwise it would have been a very long journey all in one go. The mini bus ride from Pai was not the best. We drove back through the 762 bends leaving at 6am and didn't arrive until after lunch. Lots of windy roads to make us feel car sick!

We did not have long too explore here but we saw what we could in a day & walked all around the town, down by the riverside and visited the night markets.

Pong Duet Hot Springs

We stopped off at the hot springs where one of them was the highest geyser in Thailand. There was a section where the water was cooler than the 100 degree geyser, where you could dip your feet in and have a mini foot spa.

There were also wells with the hot spring water bubbling away. We bought three eggs in a basket and dipped them in using a hooked stick. Boiled eggs for breakfast. Yum!

The White Temple – Wat Rong Khun

It didn’t take us long to find another temple did it! This was a new contemporary unconventional temple still being built. It really was something different to the other temples we have seen so we were glad we went.

The outside was bright white with glittering mirror glass all over it. All around the outside were trees with clay heads hanging from the branches. To enter the temple you first have to walk over a bridge over a moat filled with hundreds of sculptures of hands reaching up – some holding skulls. Inside there are paintings on the walls of things such as Michael Jackson, Batman, the twin towers and other images from the modern day media representing good and evil.
