Pai was a long 4 hours minibus journey from Chiang Mai. The roads are very windy, 762 turns in total! We were definitely glad to get off that bus….the American girl telling her life story very loudly ALL the way there did not help the journey either! ;-)

Once we arrived we were immediately glad we had made the decision to stop by at this place. It's a very quiet village and it’s more set up for Thai tourists than western tourists, which makes a nice change. The streets are lined with small cottages turned into restaurants & stalls, flowers planted everywhere & beautiful scenery.

We initially were going to stay here for two nights but decided to extend to four as it was so different to places we have visited before.

Cooking Class

We had a day learning to cook Thai food which was fantastic. The lady that ran it was quite bossy & went very fast, we much preferred the class we took in Bali to this one. We cooked 5 dishes;

-         Red Curry

-         Pad Thai

-         Thai Soup

-         Mango & Sticky Rice

-         Thai Stir Fry

We are especially happy now we know how to make Pad Thai as it is our fave! We got taken to the markets to buy food as well and showed all the interesting foods that locals eat. One stall had ant eggs for sale! They cook them and put them in omelettes…the ants were hatching out of the eggs on the table and you could see them all running around…that’s one new food we won’t be trying!

Exploring the Town & Surroundings

We got a moped for a couple of days and set off exploring. The village itself did not take long to get around at all as it is so small but there was lots of picturesque country side to see close by.

There was a canyon close by to visit. All around the canyon was a narrow walkway so you can walk all the way around it…if you lost your balance though it was quite a long drop down!

We also went to see a couple of waterfalls. One went over smooth rocks so you could slide down it like a waterslide. The other one was a high multi-tiered waterfall and we followed it up climbing up the rocks as far as we could go.

For a couple of hours we drove up a mountain, there were very windy roads all the way up & the further up we went the colder it got! Was very nice scenery all the way up.

Strangest Thing to Happen

The Thai lady that ran our cooking class told us a long elaborate story of how her Dutch boyfriend was plotting to kill her. She had a black eye from where he had beaten her. She showed us all the weapons she had found that he had hidden around the house! She had just put him in prison & was trying to get him deported!
