We were catching the overnight bus from Istanbul. The buses are awesome and even have then own waiters servıng tea, coffees, soft drinks and cake.
We arrived in Varna, Bulgaria at the ungodly 4.45am which is made even more difficult when we don't have a plan. We jump in a cab and headed to the Golden Sands resort. It is not exactly a resort but an entire region. Unfortunately for us it was not the season so not much was open. It then clicked that Kate must have been in here July/August time when they have up to 40,000 visitors.
We booked a room in the near new 4 star Hotel Asteria for the off-off-peak rate of £36 a night for a double
We had some coffee and a buffet breakfast at the only other hotel open and when the sun was finally up we headed to the beach to try and catch up on some sleep from our Anzac Day tour.
After finally being able to check into our posh (well the poshest so far) hotel we had an afternoon sleep.
For dinner we decided to treat ourselves and head to the fancy restaurant Silver Gourme (this is the correct spelling) which looked like it had won a couple of awards, or they just may have been stickers for other reasons. We ordered just a main course but our lovely waiter brought out a caviar entrée, salad and ending with a delicious orange sorbet. There is nothing like coming in the off-season for them to test out new dishes on their only customers.
There was nothing else for us to do but hit the hotel casino. They made us get membership cards with our photo. We got drinks, Mark having a half glass of vodka with a dash of pineapple. We discovered the drinks were free for casino patrons. We played a little roulette and the slot machines then it was time to hit the sack and enjoy the noon check-out.
