We drove to the oldest church in Lapland, Jukkasjarvi, built of wood and completed in 1608, it was lovely inside and had a very big organ. We then had another childish moment and made some more snow angels, before setting off through Abisko National park. As Mark was the designated driver he had to navigate his way through the bendy icy roads. It got quite bad as we got closer to the Norway/Sweden border. I was then in charge of snapping the scenic shots as we drove by. The scenery was picturesque and the large lake was completely frozen over. We braved the cold for some photo ops along the way, testing out the timer setting on the camera and the small tripod.
At the Sweden/Norway border we stopped to be in both countries at the same time. It starting snowing here and was very white everywhere. After this we turned around and starting the trip back to Kiruna airport. Along the way we stopped to see the reindeer and snow dogs and to also check out the ski resorts, I was a bit bummed that I forgot the toboggans. My favourite stop of the afternoon was stopping at Abisko National Park for a picnic in the snow. We found a ledge that had a little table, which was perfect for us. The ledge was on the edge of the river, it was frozen, and there was also a frozen waterfall that looked spectacular. The whole area was breathtaking and snow was covering everything. I then tried my hand at Ice sculpting, well I just got a photo, and then it was time to go to the airport.
I was a bit sad to leave as I had such a great time. It was an awesome experience and something we will remember forever.
