We headed out of Quito north along the Pan-American highway to Otavalo via autobus, Maestro Borracho (drunken master), a Jackie Chan movie played dubbed in spanish during our ride. Arriving in Otavalo, we checked into the Riacon del Viejo and got our double bed, which here is referred to as a cama matrimoni (marriage bed)...

After an unexpected mayonaise chicken stuffed avocado (yukk) from a nearby restaurant, we bought a pocket knife and a pina pequena (small pinapple) and sat in a nearby plaza.

Three blocks from our hostel is a daily market filled to the brim with alpaca hats, agora scarfts and handcrafted silver jewelry. I am wearing a $2.00 blue-green algora scarf. On Saturday the market is supposed to seap into the streets and throughout the town- an attraction that brings visitors worldwide. The town is all a bustle, Inti Raymi ´festival of the sun´, a religous ceremony of the Incan Empire celebrating the summer soltice was scheduled to start tonight. We´ll report more later.

After our pina pequena, we snuck off to the rooftop hammocks of our hostel to nap away fatigue from our bus ride.

Back to the market square, the craft stalls had been taken down and replaced with a sprall of steaming and smoking food stands. We worked on a staged dinner, papas y carne (potatoes and meat) in a bag, maize tamale, hominy y queso fresco (dried, treated maize kernels and fresh cheese) finished off with a warm raspberry-anise drink thickened with corn flour. All in total: $1.80.

Off to spanish classes..
