The mornings cycling was not pleasant. The first 19 miles were due south into a 25 knot gusting to at least 40 knot wind, and we were averaging a dismal 7 miles an hour. After what felt like an eternity we at last turned east and the cycling became easier. However as the day went on the sky turned increasing dark. The drivers informed us that there was tornado warning out, and just short of Hutchinson, as the lightening was moving overhead we hopped into the car. This turned out to be a wise move as a few moments later the main storm hit- it was unlike anything we had ever experienced in Britain. Hail stones the size of golf balls, ferocious winds and horizontal rain all hammered down. The thunder was inaudible above the noise, but the flashes were frequent. Unsurprisingly, we decided not to camp that night! We were very glad that tomorrow was to be a rest day.
