I started the day at Stones River National Battlefield.  It was at this site between December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863 during the Civil War that the Confederate Army of Tennessee fought the Union Army of the Cumberland which resulted in 30% casualties.  The Union was victorious and led to the taking of Chattanooga and Atlanta.  I took a driving tour of the battlefield and stopped at historic points along the way.

Next I dorve south on I24 and stopped at Russell Cave National Monument in Alabama.  There was so much history associated with this cave.  The ancestors of those first to America by crossing the land bridge followed their food across North America and settled in this area in 10,000 B.C.  These Paleo Indians (10,000 BC - 7,000 BC) then became Archaic (7000 BC to 1000 BV), then becamse the Woodland Indians (1000 BC to 800 AD) and finally the Mississippians (800 AD to 1500).

Next I drove 90 minutes southeast to Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.  During the Civil War in the fall of 1863, 43,000 Confederates fought 60,000 Union troops.  In the end, the Union took Chattanooga.  The park was fun to tour as I saw numerous monuments and memorials honoring the soldiers.

Finally at 5PM I arrived at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.  At this site during the Civil War, Union General William T. Sherman led his forces against the Confederates in 1864.  Ultimately it led to the fall of Atlanta.  At the park I drove to the top of Kennesaw Mountain for a view of Atlanta.
