I woke up at 8AM and drove an hour west to Grant Kohrs Ranch National Historical Site.  This site had been the headquarters of one of the biggest ranges in the 19th century.  Now Grant-Kohrs is maintained as a working ranch and living museum honoring the fronteir cattle industry of the 1860's-1930's.

I drove south on I15 and stopped at Fairmont Hot Springs.  I paid a small fee and was able to sit out and swim in the natural hot springs swimming pools.

Later I drove southwest to Big Hole National Battlefield.  I started at the visitor center and watched a video on the history here.  This had been the site where Nez Perce fled the U.S. Army troops and fought here in 1877.  Both sides suffered heavy casualties, but it mostly served as a massacre and end of the Nez Perce War of 1977.  Afterwards I spent some time viewing artifacts in the visitor center.  I took a hike out to where the U.S. Army troops had made their surprise attack.  I also viewed where the Nez Perce camp had been.

Next I drove east and stopped at Bannack Stae Historical Park.  Now Bannack is a ghost town and I walked its spooky streets and visited buildings like the school house, church, jail, motel and more.  Lewsi and Clark had originally passed through this area.  Then in July 1862, gold was found in the creeks and the first recorded mining claims were made in Montana Territory.  By the spring of 1862 Bannack had a population of 3,000.

In the evening I drove and slept in Dillon, Montana.
