Major road problems sent me on a 2 hour goose chase on a gravel road with endless switchbacks. Somehow it took me 230 miles to arrive at Moab, Utah.

On July 7th I had a great day at Arches National Park! I drove the length of the park and made many stops and took many hikes. The scenary along the road was incredible with enormous red rock cliffs and spirals. I saw the La Sal Mountains and Petrified Dunes. Balanced Rock was an enormous boulder perched atop a thin base.

I did a one mile hike to the North and South Window arches and had a great view of the Turret Arch.
At Garden of Eden I made my own trail and hiked about a mile out to see cliffs and arches. I climbed a rock wall to find a natural 2x2 window in the rock face.

The 3 mile hike to Delicate Arch was unreal. It was a grueling uphill rocky hike in the heat and I can still taste the sweat and feel it burning my eyes. But once I wiped my eyes clear I could not believe the site!! The journey was well worth the treasure at the end. I relaxed underneath Delicate Arch for over 2 hours and ironically read Desert Solitare (the story of the beginnings of Arches National Park). Later I did a 2 mile hike to Landscape Arch which is suspended 306 feet across.

On July 8th I spent the day relaxing at Slickrock Café. I used the internet, drank cold beverages and planned future destinations. The heat in the Moab is relentless. It begins early and heats my tent like a furnace. The heat blazes until 9pm and finally cools down to 90 degrees. At 7PM today I went for an evening tour. They served dinner and then took us out on a 2 hour boat ride in the canyons. We stopped in the still of the night and music played as powerful lights lit up the surrounding canyons. I have never seen so many stars and so clearly.
