From Devils Tower I drove for 365 miles to Yellowstone National Park and arrived there at 6:20PM. Along the way I drove through Bighorn National Forest. If you ever have the chance this is one of the most spectacular drives you will ever make. There was a steep 3,600 foot drop off over a 13 mile stretch of the drive, but I enjoyed the scenary, streams, mountains and wildlife along the way. I entered Yellowstone through the east entrance and drove to Bridge Bay campsite. On June 25th I drove to the Canyon of the Yellowstone. WOW! I did a ranger hike and then walked to Artist Point to view the waterfall.
At 1PM I took a drive through bison infested roads to arrive at Norris Geyser Basin. I took a 2 mile hike with a ranger and saw many hot springs and small geysers. Today I saw bison, ravens, osprey, deer, trout and pelicans. On June 26th I visited Old Faithful area. I took a 2 1/2 mile hike around Old Faithful geyser basin. I saw many geyser..some erupting and some dormant. I watch Old Faithful erupt at 12:35 and 2:10PM. In between I enjoyed a Kodak photo seminar. From 2:30-5PM I drove NW to view Midway Geyser Basin, Black Sand Basin, Biscuit Basin, and then drove to Firehole Lake Drive. Within Old Faithful Basin I visited Geyser Hill, Grand Geyser, Castle Geyser and many, many more.
At night I cooked dinner and drank hot chocolate next to my grand fire. On June 27th I sat on a 2nd story patio at the Old Faithful Inn for most of the day and watched Old Faithful erupt four different times (four times!) as I further planned my trip.
On June 28th I set up a new campsite at Madison and then drove to Gatlin, Montana to go white water rafting. I sat in the front of the boat and had a blast riding class 3/4 rapids on this 10 mile trip that culminated with Mad Mile which included 8 consecutive wild rapids. At 9:30PM I went to a fascinating outdoor slide show on the stars and planets. At 11PM I got to look through 2 powerful telescopes. The 1st telescope focused on the 2nd star in the Little Dipper which was really 2 stars clumped together. The 2nd telescope displayed a bright image of Venus. All in all I drove 480 miles in and around Yellowstone.
