The obvious question for every trip is usually, "Why there? Why Costa Rica?". It was a matter of surrendering to Fate really. Over a two month time period, the travel bug had bitten me once again and I hopped on the computer to dream a bit about distant lands. Dreaming compromised of reading other people's travel blogs, reading travel articles on websites like Budget Travel/CNN Travel, etc., with a supplemental query for travel tickets on kayak.com or orbitz.com. With an accumulated urge to actually "move", we worked out the date and did "hard" queries on the ticket websites
Generally speaking, the price of airfare is still on an all-time low probably due to the languishing economy. With my spreadsheet in hand, which served as a list of choices that included some of our eternal favourites (i.e., Lisbon Portugal, Ankara Turkey, etc.), we settled on Costa Rica. It was more like we scored on Costa Rica, because airfare to its capital city, San Jose, was for US$250RT/each person (average prices normally range from $400-$800 depending on the season)!!! I got dizzy for a moment, collected myself, clicked on the Purchase button, and planned to meet Destiny.
With the exception of die hard surfers looking for that perfect wave, Costa Rica had been relatively unknown in the general tourism community for quite some time. However, beginning in 1993, tourism surpassed its leading banana industry. And in 2008, an explosion in tourism resulted in more and more people discovering it's natural, and relatively untouched beauty. It's now got the reputation for being a place for adventure and nature appreciation travel. Because of Costa Rica's nature, it held a very special interest for me being an advocate for animals and all things green. At least for me, the plan was to immerse myself in Costa Rica's natural environment, whether it be a walk through tree canopies, observing wildlife, kayaking through rivers, surfing its waters, or simply sitting and having Nature's aura course through my veins.
Sit back with me through this blog and come along this new adventure. Oh, and don't forget to fasten that seat belt... this one may be a bumpy ride. Pura Vida!
