Happy 4th of July! As I sit here in our West Los Angeles apartment listening to the fireworks in the distance, it seems like a fitting time to declare my independence by announcing my upcoming adventures in Central and South America.
My travel-longing self and Sophie are a month away from departing for Managua, Nicaragua. One way tickets. Return location: TBD. We are "flying by the seat of our pants" as my mom would say. No reservations and only a general itinerary will be set forth before our departure. The goal is to "vagabond" our way to (and around) South America and see as much as possible. Did I mention we are on a budget??
This blog is to keep friends and family updated and to entertain any and all onlookers with stories and pictures...hopefully inspiring you all to follow your hearts and to see the world. We are happy to receive questions, comments, concerns (only constructive concerns allowed!), encouragement...feel free to get caught up in this trip as if it's your own!
Currently, Sophie is away in Western Europe notching her first solo backpacking trip. I miss her dearly, but know that she is having a great time...plus her newfound skills will be important for our backpacking trip! Meanwhile, I'm saving all of my money and outfitting myself here in California with travel equipment, vaccinations, information, and contacts...basically preparing for a trip of a lifetime!

Dear Sophie and Evan
I am so happy to see the two of you, so beautiful, radiant and full of light in this journey. Much love to you both. Please let me know when you get to Brazil. The beach of Tabatinga, in the city of Caraguatatuba, Sao Paulo State is a gorgeous spot on the beach and is waiting for you. Love, Nic
Re: Dear Sophie and Evan
Dear Nic, Thank you for your generosity. We just found Caraguatatuba on the map and that will be our goal...before Sophie has to come back to see you in year two! Sending love back your way... Sophie & Evan
Love that face: )
I have looked at all the photos several times. I check often to see if you have posted more blogs. Sending love hope you are having great fun, loving each other and being kind to one another and not missing the beauty of the present! Where are you now? Love, Mom
Re: Love that face: )
Mom, thanks for being a fan of our travels. We are safe in Cali, Colombia. It has been a crazy last week...we took three boats along the pacific coast from Panama City to Buenaventura, Colombia. We both seem to have the flu, but are slowly improving. The people at our hostel are very nice and all chip in suggestions to get better. Love you and miss you very much, Evan ...we will have some posts up soon.
Birthday Wishes!
Happy Happy Birthday to my beautiful Sophie! I'm so glad you're having such and awesome time out there. Evan...please give her a GIGANTIC hug and kiss from me! I love you both! Cheers, Monnique
I didn't forget to write!!
Hey Sophie and Evan, WOW - you are making you way through the map just as you promised. I have to say I think of you often, and always keep you in GREAT vibrations and radiant JOY for each moment you're away. I am looking forward to a front seat when you gather friends to tell your tales of a summer making memories...and hey, getting the flu is surely a memory - even if not the one you anticipated. Bless everyone's opinion and support on feeling better. Glad you're having ice cream, diggin the photos for sure as a way of sharing your adventure. I'm there in my glad tidings. Loving you!!! xoxoxo
You guys are awesome!
Great to know things are going so much better. Hope Quito has been all you hoped it would be. Karen was really delighted to meet both of you and spend time with you. Sending the Light for a fun-filled, safe, fulfilling journey ahead! Loving you both, Dad/Phil
