We spent our first night in the village of a San Juan. It was very basic accommodation and the evenings got very cold but it was lovely to be out in the middle of nowhere with little technology. Although going without hot water was a bit of a shock to the system.
Bolivia carnaval was still in full swing in the village and after our dinner in the hostel there was an invasion of locals in full celebration. The group ranged from teenagers to seventy year olds, both male and females and most of them really drunk and on the prowl for more beer! It was fascinating to watch them staggering around, singing, dancing, playing their intruments (each to a different rhythm and tune) and having an absolute ball. Eventually a whistle sounded to let them know that they were to move on and they gradually followed. It was a bit like the pied piper except that they were mainly adults and were seriously lacking corordination at this stage. Great to watch though!
The next morning we had an early start and headed off to see Volcan Ollague and then to the Lagunas - Canapa, Chiarcata and Honda. At this stage we were pretty high - 4,500 metres above sea lever and feeling it! The roads are all gravel tracks and quite bumpy in places, which unfortunately resulted in our van getting a flat tyre. Luckily our driver was prepared for the situation and it didn't take long to change the wheel and set off again. We stayed that night in the Laguna Colorado National Park, which was even more basic again but I think we were getting quite used to it at that stage. Hot water - who needs it!! More thumbnails ...
