I'd been looking forward to hitting Queenstown, having heard great reports from other backpackers, and I wasn't disappointed!
I stopped off that the infamous Kawarau Bungy Bridge which is on the outskirts of Queenstown and is the original bungy spot. I watched a few people doing their jumps and was quite entertained and intrigued, but I couldn't quite muster up the courage to do it myself! AJ Hackett was the guy that invented the (commercial) bungy back in the eighties with his mate, Henry van Asch. The weren't actually the originators of the idea, as the people of Vanuatu in the Pacific have been doing bungying, or 'land-diving' for hundreds of years. Crazy fools! Then it was onto Queenstown which is the party capital of the South Island. The city sits on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and is overlooked by the Remarkables Range. In the Winter its one of the biggest skiing destinations in the Southern Hemisphere. Alot of the backpackers come here to do a bungy jump,or any number of other outdoor activities, and continue the adreneline high with some partying in the evening. I had a few nights out on the town and there was definately a party atmosphere, similar to Cairns in Australia but a bit classier!
From Queenstown I did a day trip through Fiordland National Park, which is home to Milford Sound. The scenery is really amazing and was carved out during successive ice ages. I did a cruise when through Milford Sound and got to see the lovely Bowen Falls and also some fur seals taking it easy and lounging on the rocks... More thumbnails ...
