Tulips!
I've devoted one entire entry to this ... because I spent half a day there ...
It is the right time of the year to come to Keukenhof to catch the blooming of the tulips. It is the largest garden / exhibition of flowers in the world. The colours and arrangements are simply amazing ... I could not stop taking pictures ... the ones I have posted up here are those which I thought were the best ... I have lots more which I have not posted here ... :-p
Some history ... the land on which Keukenhof now sits was supposedly owned by a Countess, Jacoba van Beieren. The land was used for hunting and as well as gather herbs for the kitchen at the castle, hence the name Keukenhof which literally means Kitchen Garden. (No, I'm not that knowledgeable ... read the brochure which costs 2 Euros each ... noticed that people hardly bought it ... maybe only dumb tourist like me would)
Well, look at what Kitchen Garden is today ... wow!
It was a great experience and worth every bit of the 13 Euros entrance fee ... the only dampener was that this ...
Free guided tours of the gardens are given by the volunteers of Groei & Bloei, which is some flower / garden association of The Netherlands. It is conducted everyday at at 11.00 am and 2.00 pm. The website says they can tell you about everything that grows and blooms at Keukenhof. Naturally, I was quite excited when I got there and wanted to join in the tour ... but when it was about to start, the guide looked at me and asked if I spoke Dutch cos it so happened that day that I was the only foreigner in the group that day and hence they will conduct the tour in Dutch only. 'Too bad' they said ... Not so friendly ... sigh ...
So just a word of advice to any of my friends who are going ... no harm trying to see if you can join the tour, but you have been warned ...
:-)
