Today we, Marion and I, entered Syria. We had stayed in Urfa over night and this morning we had a three hour drive to the border town of Kilis, where we were voted off the bus in best Big Brother style. Then we got into a taxi that would take us across the border. I was a little excited as I no visa had, so I had to apply at the border. But fortunately our taxi driver was really sweet and sorted everything out for me. Most of the time I didn`t even have to get out of the car. So now I have the oddest visa you could imagine: nine postal stamps with a official stamp on top. The visa ended up costing 28 US, plus a couple of hundred Syrian pounds as bakeesh (tip/bribe)
The drive from the border to Aleppo took a little over 1,5 hour, we were driving pretty fast, and against the on coming traffic , very exciting:D In Aleppo we first had a nap and then went to meet our group, a guy from Peru, a girs from Switserland, two English girls, Marion and I, and a girl from Wales, who haven`t arrived yet because her luggage was delayed.
So far I prefer Syria to Turkey. The backside is that I have to mind what I wear, but where Turkey can`t really figure out whether she wants to be Western or Eastern, Syrian is most definitely Middle-Eastern. I get looked at a great deal, even though I`m wearing long troussers and a loose t-shirt, but I haven`t gotten any of the annoying comments I got all the time in Turkey.
Well, it`s almost time for lunch, so I`ll break for now.
Take care.
Best,
Eva Maria
