Crossing over the boarder (after several attempts and wrong roads) we finally crossed over into Poland. The roads suddenly become extremely bumpy and zig zag all over the place. Pore Grandpa even lost a hub cap in protest of the bumps. With a briefing from our polish friends, we headed straight for Auschwitz (Oswiecim in Polish) Concentration and Death camp.

Despite the hordes of 'dark' tourists (Dark referring to tourists who visit a place where human lives were lost), we managed to buy some tickets and jumped on the English tour. 5 hours later, we both emerge with a mix of anger and sadness at the atrocity which happened here.

Things which made us think:

1.     Between 1 and 1.5 million people were killed across the three Austrich sites.

2.     The inhuman way people can be killed (death was administered via shooting, suffocation via gas chambers, hanging or malnutrition / starvation.

3.     Some companies which were founded by Nazi leaders skill exist today (Bayer – Pharmaceuticals). We have chosen to boycott their products.

4.     Our beloved VW... has the name Volks... which was a term during the Nazi rule for people who shared the Nazi belief/way of life.  Is it right to drive a VW?

We are often debating if we could have resisted the German Nazi’s?, and if we were German, would we have voted in Hitler and supported the mass killing of Jewish people?

As we drive away from this horrible place we cant help but think how easy it is for us today to simple get in our cars and drive away. When only 60 years ago 1.5 million people walked into this place and only 7000 got to walk-away. chilling just to think about it.
