So after the whole traveling fiasco of trying to arrive here, we walked for what seemed like forever and finally found our hotel. As you can tell from the name, it was not the best of places. In other words, it was getto. We had a nice room with a tv to our suprise, but we had to share a toilet and ONE SHOWER FOR THE WHOLE HOTEL!! The shower was pretty scary too (see attached picture for further proof of the scaryness).
The part of town we were in wasn't the greatest either, there were sex shops on every corner, but it was fine. It was really close to the train station and we could get around pretty easily from it.
The guy who owned the place was nice though
Tuesday June 21st, 2005 - EVERYTHING IS CLOSED
Today we slept in because we were so exhausted from our day of useless travel annoyances. It was really hard to sleep though because they were doing construction right outside and it was so LOUD!
We decided we wanted to see the Pompidou Center today so we took the metro and were very proud of ourselves not to get lost! we found it fine and walked around but oddley enough, it was closed. Two street artists informed us of this and drew our pictures but we didn't buy them because we have no room to carry them!
After this Liz decided she wanted to see the Picasso Museum so we spent over an hour trying to find it and when we finally did...it was CLOSED because everything is closed on Tuesdays - a fact which would have been useful before the aimless search began!
We then tried to find our way down to the River Siene (sp??) but again got lost and ended up at another monument whose name escapes me now. Finally we found it and walked to Notre Dame where we went inside while a mass was going on so that was really cool. We had dinner in the park behind the church then made our way back to the hotel and crashed.
One neat thing about today though was that it was the annual Fete De Musique so there were people playing in the streets all day
Wednesday June 22nd, 2005 - BOAT TOUR
Today we walked to the Sacré Coeur from our hotel because we were staying right near it. The church is beautiful but you weren't allowed to take pix inside.
After that we made our way back and ate a delicious lunch of Pizza in our hotel and then made our way down to the Eiffel Tower to catch the Batobus - a boat tour around the Siene. We were quite pleased to get a student rate on that and took the full 1.5 hr tour around and saw London from the water. We ended up back at the Eiffel Tower but decided the line was too long and made a pact to get up early the next morning and go when it opened so as not to have to wait long.
We ended up getting back to the area around our hotel pretty late and had a really hard time finding food - as in we walked around for over an hour and almost had to resort to McDonalds! *gasp!* but all was well, we found a place right beside and got baguettes.
Thursday June 23rd, 2005 - FEELING HOT HOT HOT
So our brilliant plan of getting up early didn't work seeing a our alarm did not go off. so we ended up having to wait for an hour - which really wasn't all too bad. Liz yelled at some dude who tried to cut in line and was very proud of herself. We went up to the very top and had lunch on the tower
We then went to the Louvre where Liz had to sit in the shade because she was really overheated and Thomas walked around and took pictures. We then walked to the Champes Elyses (sp??) - which, btw, is not a short walk.
We realized while at the Arc de Triomph, that there was a storm rolling in, so we jetting back to our hotel and sure enough, as we got there a HUGE and amazing thunderstorm started to rage. we still needed dinner and wanted to go back to the place we had pizza yesterday so we ventured out in the rain but the place was closed! we found some baguettes and got those and ran back drenched to the bone - except where our rain jackets covered!
