So here I am in my hotel room in Cairo!
Although it is 1.30am the city is still bustling. I was told many of the shops stay open until midnight, but by the sounds coming from outside I reckon they must be open 24 hours.
If you asked me for one word that summed up my first impression of Egypt it would be; Suspicious. There was nothing malicious during my entry to Cairo, but lots and lots of checking of paperwork, passports and the like, and even at the hotel more checks, bag scanning and well quite simply; suspicion.
A sobering thought, and a reminder that different cultures have different laws, a poster at Cairo Airport had some nice welcoming words and a warning that drug trafficking was illegal here and those caught, would be hung!
I know I will have to deal with several culture shocks along the way, so this is nothing.
We passed some quite fabulous buildings on the way in and whilst my Egypt itinerary has been blown because of losing a day (off to Alexandria tomorrow) I hope I can get to see Cairo before I leave.
Ever the entrepreneur I spotted a great business opportunity, I have never seen so many cars broken down with drivers anxiously rummaging under bonnets as on the short journey from the Airport tonight - an automobile association would have a blast here.
