Oamaru.... a wee little town half way down the east coast of New Zealand's South Island... at one point, this was a hustling, bustling commercial port... but after a time of abandonment (thanks, recession!) it has transformed itself into a nice little tourist destination... it has a few things that draw people to this little place.

1. blue penguin colony - every night an hour before the sun goes down (which is about 11pm right now!), anywhere from 150-200 of these tiny blue birds come waddling out of the beach, over roads, rocks and pretty much anything else, into their nesting areas... we paid $20 a piece to witness these things come out and it is best described as funny cute... first off, penguins has a funny way of walking.. next, these guys are tiny and finally, there are about 150 of them! funny cute...

2. Whitestone Cheese factory - i love cheese. eunice loves cheese. so we went here, and ate cheese... we purchased two cheeses which we ate in the car with crackers and pepperoni... YUM!

3. NZ Malt Whiskey Company - this was a treat for me especially as i like the taste of single malt whiskey. not only did i get to sample four or five different types, but i also got to learn a bit as well... did you know that Scotch is basically single malt whiskey made in Scotland? only whiskey from scotland is called scotch. you could make the same thing in NZ and i can't be called scotch... fun.. but let me tell you about milford whiskey.. if you like whiskey, look for this label... i like the 10 year old best... try it out!

4. old style buildings made of Oamaru stone... check out the pics......

so after a couple nights in Oamaru, we set our sights on the city of Dunedin.. but there were a couple of stops we intended to make...

first off, about a half hour outside of Oamaru, there are these curious boulders on the beach that you can only see during low tide.. they're curious because they're round... from afar, it looks like a child dropped a bag of marbles into beach... how? no idea... but they're there so we took a look...

secondly, you all know how much eunice and i LOVE LOVE to eat... bordering on LUST... well, there's this restaurant recommended by more than a few people including the Lonely Planet called Fleur's... great fresh seafood from a few feet away... they catch their own fish... so we went... FANTASTIC FOOD! wonderful seafood... the chowder was awesome, the blue cod wrapped in bacon was delicious and eunice's flatfish with two kinds of sauce was perfect for two good meal starved travelers! :).... "yes" it cost more than our typical meal, but it was well worth it to visit a landmark and experience some good culinary food...
