Langkawi is Malaysia's equivalent to Hawaii in the states. it is a resort island full of malls, shopping and pristine beaches. instead of going overland into Thailand, we decided to island hop from Penang, Malaysia to Langkawi and then take it from there...
Malaysia has LOTS of wonderful islands... so why is Langkawi the designated resort island?... well, back a few years ago, because of its proximity to Thailand, the malaysian officials decided to make the island DUTY FREE... yes... shopping galore minus the horrendous taxes (malaysia being a muslim nation is really high on the alcohol/cigarette taxes - beers are close to $4 a bottle... that's SUPER expensive for SE Asia - anyways, on Langkawi it was a mere $.50 - can you see why its such a popular island?) so with this designation, the island resort was born...
Langkawi is HUGE in terms of island standards... its approximately 300 miles in circumfrence... and we drove most of it on motorbike! (of course the road network is MUCH shorter) our bums were a bit sore... thankfully, we got an automatic motorbike and eunice got a chance to drive a lot of it... no accidents or near accidents this time around...
anyways, here's the story on langkawi... we laid on the beach, rode our motorbikes and enjoyed our last nights in malaysia... truthfully speaking, langkawi was more of a mandatory stop over on our way to Thailand... so we just played it low key and didn't take advantage of any of the watersports or anything... besides, being a resort island, everything was bit too pricey for our standards...
