Since it is the weekend, Soogine (my sister, who's interning in Belgium this summer) and Miss Chung (the residing cook at the embassy residence)had their days off. We also had Soogine's friend visiting. So we decided to all go to Brugge.
Our first stop was at the Markt and the Belfort-Hallen belfry. After climbing 366 steps we saw the gorgeous view of the town and the amazing carillon of 47 bells that tolled noon. Following the recommendation of Ed's tour book (which never failed us) we went to a bakery/restaurant called Le Pain Quotidien (something very different in Flemish). The tartine there was AMAZING! After lunch, we went to Musee Groenige, the Fine Arts Museum. The museum had dedicated about half of its space to Frank Brangwyn, a Brugge-born artist. He is famous for his etchings and they were absolutely fabulous. After the museum visit, we did the touristy boat ride then luckily went to Beginjnhof - the Beguine convent of the vine founded in 1245 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage - thanks to Soogine's insistance. Come to think of it now, it is not a place that's architecturally breath taking. Rather it's a simple place - a church and white houses surrounding a group of trees. But there was something very serene about the place - maybe it was the silence or the nuns walking around...
When we came home, my mom had prepared us a charcoal BBQ of pork! More thumbnails ...
