Day 15 Goa
Another tough day of sunbathing and reading! Mick was very good and got up early to go for a run. We did also manage a short stroll to the village too. Met a lovely shop keeper called Leela. She had very good English and described a lot about her life (which had the desired effect of winning us over!) But we did believe her. She was married off at age 14 and had her first child at 15. She now has 4 children at age 25. Three girls and a boy. When she had her baby girls no one came visiting to see how she or the babies were doing. A different story when she had her son - suddenly everyone was congratulating her! 3 daughters means 3 dowries to save for. She herself has had no education past the age of 8 years old, as a girl she wasn't considered worth it. She'd like a different outcome for her own children, but very much has to obey her husband and whatever decision he and his family make. He sends her to work in the shop, whilst he sits at home.
We bought lots of stuff and didn't haggle! I know this is obviously a tactic that works with tourists - another couple here heard the same story from her - but that doesn't make it untrue!
Just watching "The Dark Knight" in the room at present before heading off to Joets for some Goan curry!
Noticed today they have a picture of St Francis of Assisi behind the bar with a garland of marigolds around him!
Haven't taken many photos today - too busy sunbathing!
