Long before leaving on this trip people told me to be sure and check out Portland, Oregon.  I'm staying at a friend who lives in an apartment with a wonderful view of downtown Portland, and when it is clear, Mount Hood, looming on the horizon.

I spent a day downtown, walking the streets of the business district, checking out some interesting lunch options available from the many trucks parked in the area.  The Willamette River waterfront offers a refreshing oasis in the middle of the bustling city.

One afternoon, we took a ride to Rooster Rock, a popular local swimming hole on the Columbia which offers clothing optional swimming.  Many people were there to take advantage of the rare warm sunny day.

Washington Park was near to where I was staying, so I hiked into the park, viewed the beautiful Rose Garden, and then spend an hour in the Japanese Garden, where it rained most of the time.  Back on the trail, I eventually found my way to the Hoyt Arboretum, where any tree that grows in this area was present and clearly labeled.
