getting a little more confidence now!!
Entry 10 of 56 | show all | print this entry |
college again today - worked on numbers and the alphabet. I felt about 2 doing it but i suppose its got to be done. After class i met with kelly and ida and went to the markets. The market we went to is only quite small, but has everything from toe nail clippers to hair clips, from blankets to bug spray, and from toilet paper to toasted nuts. It was nice to browse around but ive heard that there are better markets here. I will make it my mission to find them and do some bargain hunting.
Kelly and i then went onto see the indiginous art museum. kelly had memorised the direction there so that we didnt look like tourists carrying a map. In the museum there was a hand weaving demonstration given by two indiginous women. The intracacy was facinating therefore i sat pirched just a few feet behind one of them for almost 15 minutes watching how it was done - yes and i took a video too (major tourist alert!!!)
The museum had a variety of exhibits showing textile crafts/dance and music and ceremonial practices with the yarn (which involve throwing rocks...oooh step away). Obviously i found the dance and music eshibit quite interesting - especially learning about the dance that men do in some villages where they impersonate butterflies wearing heavy metal wings (not the type of music by the way). I found it quite interesting that the men sometimes died from falling with the weight of the wings....i asked myself why? maybe it was some sort of sacrifice.
Also in the museum is a shop, where the art is for sale, with items such as bigs, purses, coca pouches, ponchos, calendars, etc. But it also had the art canvasses. i did indtend on buying one of the canvasses to send home but to be fair it was pretty expensive even by bolivian standards, so i didnt - i really do have to keep stopping myself buying everything in site. It sthe lack of room in the back pack thats the problem mainly.
The girl on the desk at the museum spoke good english so i took the opportunity to be lazy and ask her where i could either learn traditional music or weaving. She directed me to the Centro de Culural Meses (the cultural centre) where they hold classes, so off i went and enquired.
Juan, the guy on the desk, showed me around the centre, where they had a display of fantastic folkloric instruments and cotumes. It was quite impressive. the classes are held every night between 7 and 8. I plan to go tomorrow.
This evening i went for a meal for david (the student who lives in the house i stay at) as it was his 21st birthday. Many of the students from the college were going to i went with the flow and went along. i wasnt going to eat but i just ended up ordering a salad...bad mistake...they wash it in the water (which is apparently not good)...and whoops... stephie has the shits!!
I realised after tonight, even though it was ok to chat to lots of different people, and now matter how much fun you have, you can never have as much fun as with those you choose to have in your life. So, going out on the piss here is not really going to be something im going to make a habit of, (we'll see he) but thats how i feel now anyway. Im in Boliva to see and experience it, and thats what i plan to do from now on.

I wish i was there to expeiencing the different culture. I didn't realise that where you are staying at first would be so civilized. I don't know why i expected you to be in quite a poverty sticken place. And then when you mentioned a maid in one of your blogs i was really supprised.
What a laugh you talking about slimming pills with silvia! I can just picture you!
Well my arms are getting... show all
