Hello all,
Today we spent the day just touring the Bryce Canyon area. Although there were shuttle busses available, we chose to go strictly by car today, as there were no restrictions like there were at Zion National Park.
Bryce Canyon is just as overwhelming in it's splendor but in a different way. The elevation is higher so the topography is different. This whole Colorado Plateau and the "family" of parks therein have been explained to us in different lectures by Park Rangers in such a way as to show how, through time, these features came to be. Today we learned all about "Hoodoos". What's a Hoodoo? It's a geological formation whereby the flow of water, and the freezing and thawing of water, forms walls called "fins" and the further erosion of these fins causes separation into sections called Hoodoos. These are plentiful here in this particular park, but not found but a couple of other places on the planet. The combination of time, water, temperature, tectonic movement, and the specific kinds of rock involved all make these geological formations possible. It's very interesting to listen to these dedicated park personnel talk about something they obviously feel very passionate about.
Not too much very exciting to tell about today. I was hoping to get a Bison burger or an Elk steak today but that didn't happen. Just a day spent stopping at every available point along the route to see something different, or just from a different angle. Samuel also completed his Junior Ranger program today for the Bryce Canyon National Park. He's so into this stuff now and enjoys answering their questions and filling out his little book of observations and especially the swearing-in process. He's collecting so many badges and patches, we've told him we'll have to buy him a special vest to put them on when we get home.
Tomorrow we leave Cedar City for the last time. We're headed to Salt Lake City, though I'm told that our hotel is in a town called Sandy? I'm not sure I've got that right, but we'll see. And yes, my first question was "Does that hotel have internet access?" and I'm told that it does. Hope so.
So now I'll go to the picture placement process and try not to put up too many. If you have comments or concerns, we'd love to hear from you on this site using the 'post a comment' button.
See ya down the road,
Quinn
