After three days we returned back to Labuan Bago to catch another boat out to an island called Kanawa. We had stumbled upon its existence purely by chance in a Conde Naste article on tropical hideaways.

The boat pulled up at the dock which jutted out into the crystal blue sea, where thousands of fish swam below. We grabbed our rucksacks and started walking along the dock not believing our eyes at the sight of baby black tipped sharks swimming a few feet from shore. They soon became known as the welcoming committee - causing much fascination for any new residents arriving on the island.

We opted for a bungalow - made out of bamboo, with a large stoop at the front. Before we arrived we had thought about downgrading to save a bit of money - the options being a small bungalow made from straw bales with open sides, or a tent!

Our decision to hold tight and stay in the bungalow was lucky, as that night a tropical storm erupted over Kanawa and we were very grateful not to be in either the straw bungalow or the tent!

The freak storm passed and we were to have glorious sunny days, circumnavigating the island and walking up to the highest peak. But the most fun was had in the water, jumping off the peer and snorkelling around the most abundant reefs we have ever seen. Turtles, sharks, bump head parrot fish, lion fish, rays and thousands upon thousands of brightly coloured fish.

We were some of the youngest on the island, many other travellers hearing about the island through word of mouth or through recommendations. We had some fascinating conversations in the one and only restaurant with Canadians, Americans and Dutch - eager to hear the tales of our travels who were escaping the winter in their own countries.

Our four nights soon came to an end and we were desperately sad to leave. Kanawa is a magical spot, we loved every second we stayed there. If you ever find yourself in this part of the world, spend a few days on this island and it will steal your heart too.
