Moving fast towards Guatemala, I made two more stops. The first one in Oaxaca, a very nice city with a nice atmosphere. It has nice colored houses and a vibrant central plaza with lots of restaurants, teraza´s and some nice colonial buildings.
It was also the place for another chance for pre Columbian ruins to impress me. We (two Spanish girls I met in Mexico City and me) went to the famous Monte Alban, it was the capital of the Zapotec culture that ruled in that region almost in the same era as the Teotihuacas (see previous entry). Anyway, it was again very hot and very dry and again I was not very much impressed. Inca´s do a much better job!! Time to just ignore all the ruins on my way from then on? I decided to give it one more try, in Palenque with the first Maya ruins.
After this it was time to say goodbye to Raquel en Onia, the two Spanish girls (or should I say Catalan?). They tried to learn me some Catalan, which didn´t really work, but my Spanish didn´t get worse during these three days of traveling together. They were off to the coast for three months of volunteer work, and I, as already said to the ruins of the last chance in Palenque.
