Center of the feminine energy on earth, Uxmal is a very high energy center seeked by many for spiritual reasons.

A little bit of history:

While much work has been done at the popular tourist destination of Uxmal to consolidate and restore buildings, little in the way of serious archeological excavation and research has been done here, therefore the city's dates of occupation are unknown and the estimated population (about 25,000 people) is at present only a very rough guess subject to change upon better data. Most of the architecture visible today was built between about 700 and 1100.

Maya chronicles say that Uxmal was founded about 500 by Hun Uitzil Chac Tutul Xiu UxmalRuins29

. For generations Uxmal was ruled over by the Xiu family, was the most powerful site in western Yucatan, and for a while in alliance with Chichen Itza dominated all of the northern Maya area. Sometime after about 1200 no new major construction seems to have been made at Uxmal, possibly related to the fall of Uxmal's ally Chichen Itza and the shift of power in Yucatan to Mayapan. The Xiu moved their capital to Maní, and the population of Uxmal declined.

After the Spanish conquest of Yucatán (in which the Xiu allied themselves with the Spanish), early colonial documents suggest that Uxmal was still an inhabited place of some importance into the 1550s, but no Spanish town was built here and Uxmal was soon after largely abandoned.

My experience:

The light and sound show is great, colorful and although my spanish is still limited, they tell a great history of the life at that time.  The site in the day is much more impressive though.  Its a huge site, most of its pyramid can be climbed and its highest summit offer an amazing almost 360 degrees view of the surrounding jungle.  The Great Pyramid has a "seat" at its top on which sitting on (when the guard is not watching you) give a funny feeling throughout the entire body.  An impressive thing about Uxmal is the amount of bees that can be found at the site.  They are litterally covering almost all of the ground of the site.  In some area, their buzzing sound can be well heard and joined with the energy of the site, this vibration is very intense and stirs up intense feelings.  As the humans cannot survive without the bees (important part of the food chain), it somehow felt reassuring.

Very spiritual encounters and friendships in Uxmal during my 5 days spiritual/meditation workshop with Drunvalo Melchizedek.  More to come on this later on.
