Early Saturday morning my Auckland friends and I rented a car and drove down to the Waitomo Caves!! We booked a trip, since they don't let you go alone! They took us down to Ruakuri Cave.
First, we suited up and they taught us a little bit about abseiling(rapelling).
After a 3 minute lesson, they led us to a 30m (roughly 100ft) hole in the ground and our adventure began!! First we abseiled down to the bottom of the cave. The tricky part about this is that there isn't a wall, so you're basically just travelling down a rope-pretty cool!
After we made it down, we wandered a bit to a zip line (they call it a flying fox-I think that's stupid though!). If you haven't heard about these, this is a cord that they attach you to and you fly down it really fast. This one was in the dark though, except for the really cool glow worms on the ceiling! Very pretty
These glow worms are actually fly larvae and in the dark they look like little stars!
After we black water rafted through the caves and checked out more glow worms, climbed up a bunch of underground waterfalls and then headed back up. After spending an entire day underground, we were exhausted!!!
