I arrived in Christchurch yesterday evening, and 2 of the staff picked me up from the airport and drove me to Oxford which is about 1 hour away. We arrived at our house, I met a few of the women staying there and pretty much went straight to sleep. The next morning, we went to church down the street, and I really enjoyed the body of believers there. Then, we had lunch, and Shannon, one of the staff, took me on a tour of the base.
Our school has 43 students (14 men and 29 women) and 11 staff, and they are all so diverse and unique. I really enjoy the diversity and getting to know everyone. There are 2 places where the women in our school are staying; one is called the "ghetto" and is one big room with 13 women. I was assigned to the High Street House which is actually a house less than a minute walk from the base; we have 16 students staying there and 4 staff, but there are a few different rooms (I share a room with 3 other girls). I am really enjoying living in community with all of these women as well as all of my brothers and sisters here at the base.
Tonight, we had a welcome BBQ where we met all of the staff and enjoyed food as well as getting to know each other. Also, the guy staff of our school did a welcome Haka dance, which is a traditional dance of the Maori people here in New Zealand. After that, we all shared 3 fun facts about ourselves. It was a fun night.
