Wednesday 4 july
We have the 9 AM train to Banyuwangi, the eastern most town of Java, a ride of 7 hours. The Mutiara Timur Pagi train is on time, and its EKSA class was less run-off than the Argo Willis to Surabaya. Loads of people were there, not to board the train, but to see the Indonesian pop-star Ane Asanti who was taking this train to get married in Jimber, a few stops before Banyuwangi. He was sitting in car n3 and the film-crew and reporters were sitting with us in car n2. It was a bumpy ride through landscapes of rice fields and jungle, through coffee and tobacco plantations, around the Ijen plateau, through valleys and hills. Wonderfull sights, in particular those around Glenmore untill the end of the ride. Rice fields - from ready to be planted, young plants, fullgrown green or yellowish ready to harvest crops - were seen during this long trip. We had lunch on the train (Mie Rebus), and the Java coffee was so good we had at least 2 of them. Exiting at Banyuwangi, threre was not much option for transport as no taxi was available, only 4-5 becak drivers. We took 2 becaks to our hotel Ketapang Indah.
